Pornography Addiction
Pornographic images and content are virtually existent everywhere you turn. Many skilled marketing and advertisement companies understand that “sex sells,” and use provocative verbiage and images to attract its customers. Additionally, advances in social media and the overall ease of accessing anything sexually explicit over the internet makes the possibility for recovery much more difficult to pursue. If you are a person who cannot seem to escape watching pornographic videos and images and desire to stop, I invite you to start your journey now. If you struggle to get through life without pornography being your way of coping, I invite you to further inquire about what we can do to help.
The World Health Organization defines compulsive sexual behavior as a “persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges resulting in repetitive sexual behavior.” In fact, if you are wondering if you have an addiction to pornography, some questions you might consider include:
Do you search for pornography-related material several hours per week?
Do you masturbate frequently at the sight of sexually explicit content?
Do you find it difficult to not objectify people in a sexual manner?
Do you purchase or access sexually explicit products or applications?
Do you feel angry or irritable after periods of not watching pornography?
Have you told yourself you’re going to stop watching pornography, only to relapse and begin watching again?
Do you feel depressed after watching pornography?
Do you or have you used places other than the privacy of your own home to engage in watching pornography.
Do you hide your pornography use?
Has anyone ever told you that you have a problem with sexual behavior and/or viewing porn?
Have you ever neglected social activities, occupational responsibilities, or educational obligations to engage in watching pornography?
If you have said yes to some of the questions listed above, you may have an addiction to pornography. Oftentimes, there can be an avoidance to seek treatment due to not seeing the direct impact pornography use has had upon the individual. In fact, one of the major consequences to having this addiction is that denial can keep you from truly seeing the damage often left from compulsively viewing pornography. However, for those seeking help, they typically seek treatment when they notice consequences mounting, such as depression, loneliness, inability to engage romantically, inability to start and maintain intimate connection, and relational partner conflict.
